Ack. I did not describe our infrastructure, which is along these lines.
We run a campus-wide user managment and try to integrate every (and
I really mean every) IT service into this (DCE based) infrastructure. One
of the reason to look into phpgw as a groupware system is the ability to
integrate authentication of it's users in our infrastructure; it's nice that 
you really 
implemented this possibility. Even this easy imap way is missing in some other 
open source groupware systems.

Sure, I would agree that it's a plus for this system to keep  the 
core components maximum platform independent. But why not allow optional
components? 
I saw the PAM possibility mentionend during setup, a nice
example of a platform specific but nevertheless useful option. Anybody
still working on this?
