Ack. I did not describe our infrastructure, which is along these lines.
We run a campus-wide user managment and try to integrate every (and
I really mean every) IT service into this (DCE based) infrastructure. One
of the reason to look into phpgw as a groupware system is the ability to
integrate authentication of it's users in our infrastructure; it's nice that you really implemented this possibility. Even this easy imap way is missing in some other open source groupware systems.

My system uses LDAP to do so: Auth is done against LDAP and phpgw accounts are created automaticaly when the user logs in first. LDAP accounts are used for email and shell access (via pam_ldap) too.

Please understand that this is supposed to be a flexable and fully cross
platform
application so one cannot assume the use of things like unix system users and
cron
and other just things that are not only platform specific but also tend to
slightly
vary from version and distrobution amoungst that platform.

Sure, I would agree that it's a plus for this system to keep the core components maximum platform independent. But why not allow optional components? I saw the PAM possibility mentionend during setup, a nice
example of a platform specific but nevertheless useful option. Anybody
still working on this?
