You should think in larger scales, if 1000 users get a 500kb smaller
release that 500mb saved bandwith and I'd expect that a release gets a
few more hits than 1000. Additionally the savings will be there again
for the next releases, weigh that against the time you need to get the
newer versions from CVS. Sure, alpha channel loss or similar should not
happen. Depending on the quality of the conversion tools there's little
risk for quite some gain IMHO.
