Problem opening .sav file in PSPP

Hi all, 

I've just started using PSPP and I have some issues with opening .sav which
I receive from another program. These .sav don't cause any trouble when
being opened with SPSS 17, so it's not the file itself. 

The error message is "....sav" near offset 0x1a9c: Unknown  variable format
0. 

Now I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. I'm looking for a more
sustainable solution, since I will be receiving updates of the .sav file on
a regular basis. 

Hope someone can help me with this issue, would be much appreciated!
