In /usr/lib/pkgconfig, I find "gtk+-2.0.pc", which reads as follows: 

prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=/usr
libdir=/usr/lib

gtk_binary_version=2.10.0
gtk_host=i686-suse-linux-gnu

Name: GTK+

...is there something odd about the binary being 2.10.0 and the GTK+ version 
2.12.0?
