User manual error

The manual stats the following:
11.13 STRING
STRING /var list (fmt spec).
STRING creates new string variables for use in transformations.
Specify a slash ('/'), followed by the names of the string variables to create


In my command file I entered the following text:
string /x (A4).

which resulted in this error:
Syntax error at '/': expecting variable name.


However, the following works just fine:
string x (A4).
