Thank you for the suggestions.
Regarding 3, non-integer confidence intervals are permitted.
(If that were not the case, then the only valid values would be
zero and one, which wouldn't be very useful!)
Your other suggestions I'll have a look at to see how much work
they would take.

I'm using version 0.8 on Windows 7 and I noticed something strange when
entering data in spreadsheet mode. If I enter

3
in column 1 and then go to row 1, column 1 to enter a number, periods
appear in rows 2 and 3 of column 2 (this is fine) but the cursor goes to
the right of the period in row 2 so that when a number is entered I get a
"number followed by garbage error".
