[Qemu-devel] Qemu not working with Windows 95 or 98SE

Hello all,

after some rather frustrating hours of installing Windows, changing the
configuration, rebooting, changing, rebooting, re-installing,
rebooting... I'm giving it up. But maybe someone on the list can give me
some helpful advice or at least confirm that I've tried it correctly.

My system is "Debian GNU/Linux unstable" on a 1GHz G4 PowerPC. I've
mainly been using the Debian package of quemu, which currently is
version 0.6.0.dfsg.1-1

Interestingly enough, I was able to install i386 Linux inside of qemu
(which took terribly long) and could surf the web using the lynx
browser.

I used the setup described by John Murga in his eMail[1], a tun/tab
networking script and the following guest configuration:
IP : 192.168.2.2 DNS : 192.168.2.1 Gateway : 192.168.2.1

Though the network is working, I can ping 192.168.2.1 from both sides, I
can not ssh from one Linux to the other:
"ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host"

But my main interest was having the possibility of using windows
programs like the infamous Internet Explorer from time to time. The
setup described above worked neither with Win95 nor with 98se, neither
with the pci ne2000, nor with the isa version (which I tried because
Leigh Dyer wrote "Win98 seems to trip up in PCI mode").

The -user-net switch did not help either. Using this switch I did set
windows to "obtain IP address automatically" (DHCP) and use no gateway,
as described somewhere on this list. I also tried to open IP addresses
rather than domain names in Internet Explorer to exclude problems with
the DNS or with a "flaky windows ping binary" (John Murga).

Other observations: in Windows the "ping 192.168.2.1" does not work, the
system shut down works "sometimes", just like on a real machine. ;-)

Regards,

Vlado
