The previous commits enable the support of higher resolution VGA modes in QEMU (1152x864, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200) when using the VESA device driver (-std-vga option). The VESA device driver is known to work with Linux and Windows XP.

Is 2d acceleration possible with VESA?

No. But with VESA and virtualisation, the CPU has direct access to the video RAM, so it can be actually faster than the Cirrus VGA driver, depending on the quality of the guest OS drivers.
