I set up an Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit guest (GA, no updates) to test the 
build, but I can't seem to reproduce this.

There has to be some difference in our setups:

Are you using a 32 or 64-bit environment?
Updated ubuntu install or stock?
And can you post your configure summary? I've included my output below 
for reference.

It seems like there must be a config option that's causing this....
