First, ps -A -o cmd |grep qemu returns "grep --color = auto qemu" which is not very helpful. Second, I screwed up with the VM Window thing. When selecting machine details the system reverted to the main qemu view because that is where the detail menu is. Short version; I got to the add hardware menu and added the suggested EvTouchUSB Graphics Tablet. As I suspected, this didn't do a thing. Still fighting the wonky cursor. From the looks of the literature, I am not the only one having the problem. But no one has come up with a viable fix. Somebody please help!

You can find the syntax this VM manager uses to call Qemu in a terminal,
once VM has been launched:

$ ps -A -o cmd | grep qemu

This information could be useful to understand guest environment.

OK more information. I'm working on a Debian Stretch system on an AMD
Athlon FX processor and with qemu-kvm virtual machine installed. The
guest OS is Kubuntu17.04. Once the guest system is activated there are a
couple of different ways to access the Manager. You can call
virt-manager from the command line or you can select File > view manager
from the guest desktops. Either way you end up with the same window
which is called "Virtual Machine Manager". The menu bar has an edit
choice which leads you to "Virtual Machine Details" mentioned below. And
at that point the window closes. End of story.

Is it a Window with control buttons?
What is Window's title?
How do you call this manager (launcher's name)?

And what might that helper software be? The virtual machine manager
window seems to be malfunctioning and it is part of qemu. With that, the
main problem is still the wonky cursor.

You seem to not be talking about Qemu but about a helper software for
Qemu.

Hi all,
For the first time I have set up a qemu-kvm virtual machine on my
Debian
Linux system. I then loaded a Ubuntu guest. Everything works OK except
the cursor. If I press the left key of my mouse and try to drag
something on the screen the dragged object jumps all over the
place. The
cursor movement with out the mouse button is not as bad but still is
erratic. If I hit ctl-alt to release the cursor the problem
disappears.
I hated the Gnome desktop so I ripped out Ubuntu and loaded Kubuntu.
There was no change in the problem.

I found one fix that said to do the following:
go to virtual machine details > add hardware > input > EvTouch USB
Graphics Tablet.
this is supposed to fix the problem somehow. But there is a problem
with
this. When go to the virtual machine manager window and click on vm
details the window closes back to the tray at the bottom of the
screen.

This problem is very annoying and has been around for a while. I
want a
solution where I don't have to write a whole bunch of code. Not very
good at it.

Please help
