It core dumped with following message,
 
bash$ qemu-system-ppc -cpu 405 test-img
qemu: hardware error: Bus model not supported on OldWorld Mac machine

The default machine for qemu-system-ppc is the "g3beige" machine which emulates an old Apple Mac. You can not plug a 405 CPU into that machine, hence you get the error above.

Please select an appropriate machine type with the -M command line option :).
