Hello Francois Le,

A quick practical update with lots of partner news :)

Conference Guide

You can already download the JavaPolis 2006 Conference Guide in PDF (31Mb). We'll provide a hard copy of the JavaPolis guide in your welcome bag, so don't worry if you don't want to print/download this document

Image
Avoid the JP Queue!

People who want to avoid the queue on Monday can collect their welcome bag and university/conference badge on Sunday evening December 10th from 19h00 till 21h00 at the MetroPolis Business registration desk (normal JavaPolis entry).

JavaPolians only attending the conference can also collect their badge on Tuesday afternoon till 19h00.

Image
Special note to all JavaPolis speakers

ALL JavaPolis speakers are requested to use the JavaPolis template.
All talks should have a similar look and feel but by using our template we also introduce some trigger slides to ease the post-processing. Thanks for making JavaPolis pixel-perfect :o)

Image
JavaPolis 'Slots'

ALL University and Conference slots are now allocated, we still have a few (late) BOF and a number of Quickie slots available.
If interested don't hesitate to mail us a proposal.

The Project Semplice talk (Visual Basic on the JVM) has been canceled because 2 of the 3 engineers have left Sun Microsystems and the other engineer Tor Norbye has discontinued (for some dark reasons?) his work on this project :(

On a more positive note we've added a very interesting presentation on "Cometd - the next stage of " by Alex Russell. A talk on "Migrating to Seam (Web Beans) has been added on Friday morning. Check out the conference schedule for more info!

SUN

Another Freedom for Java Technology

Sun started a revolution with Java technology 10 years ago. With a free runtime, an open specification, and a platform-independent promise of compatibility, Java technology became a gold standard on mobile phones, on the desktop and within the enterprise. Now, in 2006, Sun is open sourcing its implementations of Java technology as Free/Libre software.

The Java community comprises many communities that have, for over 10 years now, built a large and vibrant market around the Java platform, innovating with Java technology through both closed and open source development models.

Sun is now seeding open-source communities around its implementations of the Java platform. Sun is releasing the code under an open-source license, and putting in place the infrastructure for a community to collaborate on a source-code commons.

Sun believes that open source developers gain greater freedom and customers gain more control over the rapidly developing technology they use. Sun recognizes that open source requires freedom for developers, and recognizes that the strength of Java technology is its promise of compatibility.

On Wednesday 13 (20:30-21:30), Mark Reinhold Sun's Java Chief Engineer will host a BoF to discuss this.

Make sure to attend this BoF and any of the other Sun sessions and catch the Flying Duke to get a chance to win cool prizes!!

JCS

Image CBB, The start of a SOA architecture at LNE

The 'Centraal Bedrijven Bestand' (CBB) contains identification data on all companies regarding licenses for emissions, waste production, etc. and is managed by the environmental department of the Flemish Government. The project for which JCS/Dolmen was selected, consists of the creation of a communication module enabling the Flemish Government (department Leefmilieu, Natuur en Energie) to communicate with its partners e.g. 'Vlaamse Milieu Maatschappij' (VMM), 'Openbare Vlaamse Afvalstoffen Maatschappij' (OVAM), 'Vlaamse Landmaatschappij' (VLM) regarding changes in the CBB - database. The application communicates every update or insert in the CBB database to the partners. The application deployed at the partner side processes every mutation in the database.

JCS/Dolmen implemented a module to register and handle every mutation in the CBB database and publish the changed data on a message queue. They developed a web service which enables the partners to get messages through a queuing mechanisme. Standard J2EE security next to a HTTPS secured channel is used to secure the communication. Every partner is able to configure which data will be send and for which enterprises the partner would like to receive updates. In short, JCS/Dolmen succeeded in implementing a database synchronisation application, using web services over the Internet as communication channel.

ImageThe XP experience - Retrospective

In XP you work in short iterations. At the end of each iteration a retrospective is held. The team as a whole looks back at the past iteration. What did we do well? What did we do wrong? Not that we like to fingerpoint a team member. The purpose is to improve the process, to incorporate the lessons learned. Hence the encountered problems are summarized, discussed. Actions are defined. Leads are identified.
You see in XP we do not need a huge set of procedures oracled by a 'quality guru' in his ivory tower. Improving quality is a concern of every team member, it is inherently build in the XP methodology.
Another benefit of looking back on a regular basis, is that it makes it possible to react fast. Problems can be tackled before they get the chance to endanger the project.
At last but certainly not at least, there is no need to get frustrated as a developer. If something boggles you, just bring it up during the retrospective. That's why it is fun to work in a team practicing XP.

IBM

SOA with Apache Tuscany

The Apache Tuscany project moves Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) into reality by creating a next-generation services infrastructure based on the principles behind the Service Component Architecture (SCA). With Apache Tuscany, application developers will be able to create, assemble, and deploy SOA applications in ways that are not easily done with existing middleware. Tuscany allows SOA applications to be reconfigured, reorganized or reused based on changing business needs, without a heavy development hit.

Apache Tuscany, undergoing incubation at the Apache Software Foundation, provides implementations of the SCA specifications and related technologies such as Service Data Objects (SDO) and Data Access Service (DAS). The overall goal of the project is to provide an open-source runtime platform to simplify the implementation of SOA-based applications that can be written in various programming languages such as Java, C++, _javascript_, Ruby or BPEL. Tuscany integrates with well established Web Services and server technologies such as Apache Axis2, Tomcat and Geronimo and has an extremely extensible architecture allowing integration of further containers, frameworks and languages.

Andrew Borley, IBMer and Tuscany committer, will be presenting "Apache Tuscany - Not the Same Old Architecture" at Javapolis 2006. Come along to find out more or see the Tuscany project site at http://incubator.apache.org/tuscany

Intersystems

Come and see how to reduce Java development time by 40% at JavaPolis2006

InterSystems Caché is a powerful object database and rapid application development environment. Caché lets developers work within familiar and productive object-oriented environments, but it also provides high-performance SQL access to all data. Without mapping. Now, Caché becomes even more attractive to Java developers with the inclusion of InterSystems Jalapeño technology.

Introducing Jalapeño Technology
InterSystems Jalapeño is hot new technology that automatically derives Caché classes from plain old Java class definitions. Jalapeño allows Java programmers to work within their favourite development environment – and not even think about the mechanics of how their data will be stored. And of course, when data is persisted in Caché, it automatically becomes available via both object and relational access.

How Much Time Could You Save?
That depends on the project. But published industry estimates say that the time required to map Java classes to a relational data-base can soak up as much as 40% of your total development time. That was the experience of Iran Hutchinson, a Software Systems Architect at IBM. He is developing a call centre application with Java –and using Jalapeño to persist his data in Caché.

To learn more, visit us during JavaPolis, stand 17 and attend our presentation on December 14th at 5.50 pm in room 5,
or visit www.InterSystemsBenelux.com/JavaPolis and register to get your thermostatic mug when you visit us at JavaPolis.

JBoss Seam

Java Enterprise Edition 5 is here. It's new, it's sparkling and it contains many new features. The two main ones are EJB 3.0 and JSF. In itself these are very nice aspects of JEE5, but it may be hard to glue these two technologies together. This is where Seam jumps in. Instead of letting developers work on integration and implementing common problems, it enables them to focus on the important areas: the actual business issues.

Previous EJB specifications are infamous for the complexity and the intrusive nature. EJB 3.0 evolved this into being a fine-grained component model. Basically, an EJB nowadays is nothing more than a plain old java object (POJO) with annotations. This makes it possible to create lightweight components containing session and entity beans. Seam even encourages the use of session beans as action listeners and entity as backing beans for JSF components. At first I was worried that this was the only way to make things work with Seam, but luckily Seam does not enforce this. It is easily possible to create extra architectural layers to abstract your domain layer from the presentation layer. It is you who makes the decision, not Seam.

Read the whole article on http://www.qualogy.com/nl/cases.asp

Conclusion
Seam makes it easy to integrate EJB 3.0 and JSF. It helps you to focus on the key points of your application. This saves development time and prevents having to create proprietary in-house solutions for common things.

Aranea 1.0 Final Release Available

October 13th, 2006 by Jevgeni Kabanov

We are glad to announce the immediate availability of Aranea Web Framework 1.0 final release.
Aranea 1.0 is the first stable release of Aranea Web Framework. The API are now fully frozen until 2.x release cycle and documentation includes a 120+ pages Reference Manual, an Introductory Tutorial, a Hands-On Tutorial, Technical Report, Javadoc API and example applications. The framework is widely used in-house in both large and small projects and by now has been successfully deployed to production in most of them.

Aranea is an Open-Source Object-Oriented Web Application Framework that focuses on integration, maintainability and reuse.
Our vision of Aranea includes three main themes:
1. An Object-Oriented Framework. Aranea provides the component model based on static types and usual objects that facilitates applying Object-Oriented design to achieve a high level of maintainability and reuse. It also provides an extensive reusable component library that helps build complex and dynamic user interfaces.
2. A Lightweight Web Application Integration Platform. Using Aranea component object model it becomes trivial to integrate and assemble seamlessly applications from disparate components. And since a whole application can be considered just a component it is just as simple to integrate whole applications, even dynamically. Aranea can be seen as a viable lightweight alternative to Portlets, especially with remote integration on the way.
3. A Web Framework Integration Platform. Instead of competing with the numerous web frameworks, we want to harness their power and variety by integrating them with Aranea. We'd like to enable developers to make use of any framework features or components they find useful in their applications and Aranea to serve as glue among the application components. We especially want to support making different components or parts of application using different framework, as different requirements command different approaches.

The next step in Aranea development will focus on the third theme, which at the moment is represented in prototype stage only. Our first candidates for integration are Google Web Toolkit, Java Server Faces and Struts, with the rest to follow later. We expect to present a working integration demo on the JavaPolis 2006 conference in December.
