Having found Ratpoison in my search for a window manager that minimizes
the use of memory resources, I am very happy. It cannot be possible to
go lower than this, and the functionality is still excellent.
Now that I've reached way's end as far as window managers are concerned,
I took a look at the other X related processes running on my system,
finding this:
/home/jesper% ps aux
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
xfs 511 0.0 4.6 4116 3000 ? S 20:36 0:00 xfs -port -1 -daemon
-user xfs
jesper 543 0.0 1.1 2584 780 tty1 S 20:36 0:00 xinit
/home/jesper/.xinitrc
root 995 0.9 10.6 12392 6904 ? S 20:57 1:01 /etc/X11/X :0
jesper 998 0.0 1.5 2180 1020 tty1 S 20:58 0:00 ratpoison
Hence, it seems to me the (2180/1020) bytes that Ratpoison is using are
quite modest compared to what running X (and xfs) is requiring (12392/6904).
My question is this: do you people have any tips to share on how to make
my X environment require less memory? E.g. I'm running the standard
XFree86 4.02 Mandrake RPM. Would building XFree86 on my own result in a
smaller binary? Are there more efficient alternatives to xfs? etc, etc.
I know this is OT, so please discard if out of line.
Best,
Jesper
