Literal strings are literal strings.  In some contexts they can be
treated as command modifiers (Cm), but not as internal commands on their
own.

I disagree.  Square brackets denote optional arguments.  Using Op is
perfect here, from semantic and presentation points of view.

Also curly brackets are not a replacement for parens to denote groups of
alternates.

And I am not sure that adding square brackets or parens to the Variables
section is really worth it.  So that leaves us with `select' and
`startup_message' which could use parens.  But I wonder what's the value
of grouping when there is no ambiguity.

`swap' should indeed lose one Oo/Oc pair.

Ok for those.

I see you noticed some delimiters that were not correctly handled (eg.
in hsplit); I'll audit them, along with Ar instances that shouldn't be
Ar.
