Unfortunately, just like H.264, H.265 is patent encumbered. VP8 or VP9
would be better alternatives.
Ring already supports VP8, but it is not the default codec.
Support for both H.265 and VP9 is planned, and will be implemented as
soon as I have the time to do so.
