Hi all.
I just wanted to make some suggestions before I forgot them.
*** Install Red Hat From Source rpms ***
Perhaps we should make an installation script based on Slinky and/or
Miniconda, so that we can install from scratch. I realize that this has been
brought up already, but that was before I heard of www.tinycc.org It's
supposed to compile 8 times faster than gcc. If we can get Vacuum working
well, then it should be very reasonable for computers with over a 1.5 GB to
be able to install 1 package at a time.
*** idlecron To Do a List of Tasks For When You Know the Computer is Idle
***
Perhaps we should make a script that can be executed when we are away from
the computer, or are just sitting and reading for an extended period of
time. One of the problems that I have with the various cron programs is that
a daemon must be running, which consumes valuable resources. If you execute
idlecron, it could go through a list of tasks, such as:
updatedb
[getting email]
[compiling source code]
[checking for patches to your favourite programs]
[etc.]
We could make a list called, /etc/cron.idle/ & a config file called,
/etc/idlecron.cfg. The user could decide to execute the tasks starting at
the beginning of the list each time, or continuing where he left off. This
could be executable by root only.
I don't expect that there will be much time in the next week to create these
scripts, but I'm more than interested in taking suggestions.
Sincerely, & with thanks,
Eugene T.S. Wong
