In particular, /com/mailer/aliases has always said:
##############
# Filesystem #
##############
#
# Referencing files outside /com/mailer or /com/archive is risky, because
# other partitions might be unmounted or otherwise unavailable when mail is
# still running. This includes ~/.forward files. Instead of using a
# ~/.forward file, add an alias in this file.
I just changed it to:
# Referencing files outside /com/mailer or /com/archive is risky, because
# other partitions might be unmounted or otherwise unavailable when mail is
# still running. Nowadays, it is much less likely that home directories
# will be unavailable, and procmail is supported, but note that we go to
# much greater lengths to prevent the mail filesystem from filling up than
# we do to prevent the filesystem with home directories from filling up;
# please keep important mail stuff on the mail disk.
#
# This includes ~/.forward files. Instead of using a
# ~/.forward file, add an alias in this file.
which isn't especially perfect, but it is still an improvement.
