Free UCS Outline Fonts project aims to provide a set of free outline fonts
covering the ISO 10646/Unicode Universal Character Set (UCS). With Unicode
3.1, this amounts to the monumental number of 94,140 encoded characters,
so the task will be approached in smaller steps, covering progressively
larger number of characters. Right now, OpenType appears to be the
technology we will use, but should this change in the future, the glyph
shapes should be able to be converted to other outline formats.
The principal motivation was to prevent sliding of free software users
from the use of free X Window System bitmap fonts to proprietary Truetype
fonts, as with the advance of high-quality free TrueType renderer
<http://www.freetype.org/>, the scalable outline fonts become a much more
appealing alternative for free software users. A usable free outline font
editor <http://pfaedit.sourceforge.net/> and the existance of free outline
fonts scattered around, including the URW++ release of core 35 PostScript
fonts under the terms of GNU GPL, seems a solid base to start with.
