==== Description: ====
"A community for young freedom lovers, but only in North West England so
far..."
Recently an increasing number of teenagers and young people have been active
within the Free Software world, in the North West of England, however, it has
been noticed that, in general, people tend to pre-judge one based on age
rather than abilities, achievements or what one has to say.
For one teenager, this meant that they usually were extremely unwilling to
give the impression that they were younger than the average age on a mailing
list to avoid their posts getting ignored or laughed off.
Young people are especially valuable when it comes to free software and
GNU/Linux as they not only going to be free software advocates in the future,
but will help push free software in their educational establishments.
Whilst it would be desirable to draw young people directly into GLUG's and
FSUG's, this is somewhat difficult, simply because teenagers (usually) prefer
to be in the company of other teenagers and many feel somewhat uncomfortable
in environments where they are outnumbered by those who are much older than
them and have been through several educational establishments and had industry
experience.
DFEY hopes to work *with* Manchester Free Software, local GLUGs and similar
organisations to help encourage and promote young people's involvement with
the free software community creating a social space to make it more
comfortable for young people to get involved with GLUGs and FSUGs.
==== Other Comments: ====
We have an IRC channels (#dfey-nw & #dfey) however, this is not an ideal
method of communication when some people have limited connectivity and thus we
wondered if it would be possible to have a mailing list to improve our ability
to communicate.
