Thanks, your response has been very useful.  It is just annoying that I
have such wide tabs now, if you look at the picture at
http://dev.edeca.net/screen.png you might see what I mean.  I already
have the information I want in my caption, though I can see that it
might be useful to monitor when a merge has finished.

I might consider using the .bashrc you suggested.
