With these requirements, you might be interested in dtach
<>. I haven't used it myself so I'm not
sure what it's like, but after reading your mail and dtach's site it
looks pretty close to what you're looking for.

Just tried dtach and it's great. The is exactly what I've been looking for for years. screen messes up my emulations so I could never depoly screen but I'm deploying dtach with no problems.
