Try this:
clear the screen (via CTRL-L) and issue:
| CTRL-A :scrollback 0 <Enter>
| CTRL-A [ CTRL-U # you can't scroll back
| CTRL-A :scrollback 500 <Enter>
| CTRL-A [ CTRL-U # scroll back: your buffer is empty
