Problem with multibyte characters in status line

User-agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/45.4.0

Screen version 4.01.00devel (GNU) 2-May-06, under Linux Mint 17.3
Screen version 4.04.00 (GNU) 19-Jun-16, under ArchLinux
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
SYSSCREENRC=''
hardstatus string "%{= KW}%n %h%{w}%<%= %-w%{ck}%n %t%?(%u)%?%{-}%+w %{c}%H %d %D %c'%s"

Multibyte characters appear correctly in windows; but when they appear in my status line, i get the replacement character (), and the status line wraps, causing the screen to scroll, making a big mess.

On a previous OS installation with the same .screenrc, and same locale info this did not happen, and multibyte chars appeared correctly.
