screen connecting to UART

Hello,
I'm trying to work on an RK3399 SBC by the firefly team.
The relevant docs for my board are at:

The docs say to set:
Baud rate: 1500000
Data bit: 8
Stop bit: 1
Parity check: none
Flow control: none

So I ran screen like this:
# screen /dev/ttyUSB0 1500000
I have used the serial debug device before. It is known good and works
with screen on my PocketCHIP. The only difference between settings is
that it uses a baud rate of 115200.

When I connect up screen I am root in both cases only when connecting to
the RK3399 board I get gibberish.

I'd like to know what's wrong with my setup or screen.
I note that the RK3399 folks say to use minicom but I can think of no
reason why screen should not work. I did read the relevant sections of
the man page. They are really brief.
