Thanks for pointing out newer projects such as JAS and RePast. This however

This project is far less ambitious in terms of modelling complex behaviour,
however, it is very important to be able to create a really good animation on
top of a bitmap image of a transport infrastructure (roads, rail, etc), with
agents animated to move on fixed paths from origin to destination, and
interacting with other, stationary agents on departure and arrival.
Has anyone done this using Swarm, RePast, etc???
Which tool would be *most* suitable for this task??

Dear Alex.

Probably wrong, but I believe that what you are looking for is "Crowd Behaviour" and modelling. Check this out:

Related with the "interaction" you mention, as well as using the bitmap image as for your "habitat", check section 2 in here, as well the rest:

They are: Co-evolution, Metamorphosis and Self-Organization. All these, behind biology as we know it. I mean, they are profoundly interesting as processes of information", Vitorino Ramos, 2000.
