Swarm is an Objective C library and uses GNU extensions such as nested
functions; Swarm is different from Tcl/Tk, BLT, and HDF5. In the end,
I was able to compile Swarm, but only by disabling a lot of code.

Note that it is only on MacOS X that these features are broken.
Dozens of other platforms work fine. The good news is that the GCC
3.1 development branch finally bootstraps on Darwin. Of course, it
doesn't actually install and work due to configuration problems but it
is getting closer.

For your information, I'm typing this on a MacOS X box.
