[Swftools-common] avi2swf compilation issues

Not sure if I am blind, but this problem might be simple for others.
I am running Suse9.0, I have installed the binary avifileqt, and avifile (comes with suse9.0) and when I compile swftools I get

checking for avifile-config... avifile-config
checking whether we can compile the avifile test program... no
* Couldn't compile the avifile test program.
* Disabling avi2swf tool...

I noticed, other users runing Gentoo Linux with this problem, but fail to see how they rectified it or if it is indeed the same solution.  I have had this error on Suse 9.0 and Redhat 9.0

avi2swf is the tool I need most out of the swftools.

Any help would be most excellent
