Well, if you want me at all to be able to build the trunk regularly
(see below), this looks like the only way, unless Aharon makes the
script work with older Gawk versions.  To build Texinfo and other
packages, I use MSYS, which is a Posix-like environment on top of
MinGW, so I'm constrained to whatever versions they provide.

I thought by building from the repository I help you in a way that
you'd like me to continue.  If instead it turns out this is an
annoyance for you, I will crawl back under my rock, and fix the
problems privately as best I could.

No, it cannot: see the Makefile.  The file is created by a single rule
that does renaming and editing with Sed as part of the same recipe.
