Strange error?

I use Enhanced Emacs for Carbon 21.3.50 on MacOS X. There aren't any 
configurations about tramp in my .emacs.
When I use \C-x \C-f to open a file and want to change the default path 
to / , I got a message said:

tramp: waiting 60s for prompt from remote shell
----
Then emacs hang there.

The messages in *messages* buffer:
----
tramp: Opening connection at FreeMIDI using nil...
tramp: Waiting for prompts from remote shell
tramp: Waiting 60s for prompt from remote shell
tramp-process-actions: Login failed
----

I don't know where is the FreeMIDI. None of my configure files contains 
such a string. What a strange question!
