Final attempt:
 CFLAGS=-fPIC ./configure -with-c-flags=-fPIC GPLCFLAGS=-fPIC
Same problem... so I am stuck on this. The repo version appears to be 64 bit so it is possible as it is listed as a supported build but I cannot see what I have failed to do!
I thought it would have just worked by magic
