Martin,
Thanks for the suggestion of the alternate shell. Although bash exhibits
the same behavior as sh, csh is working as expected. I'm going to go that
route. But to satisfy your curiosity, here are the answers to some of your
other questions:

Thanks again. BTW - tried this with sh on an Ubuntu host and it also worked
without issue.
