Details:

I would like for the IRC protocol in Weechat to actually be implemented as a
plugin.  This opens the doors to other protocols so they can be used with
weechat.

SILC is the best example of something that would be nice to have implemented
in weechat.  You can find protocol documentation here :
http://silcnet.org/support/documentation/specs/

Also think about how someone could fork bitlbee source and make
aim,msn,jabber, etc protocol plugins for weechat.

Moving protocol to a plugin would place weechat as probably the best text
chat client available.
