This happened when try to install Grub into a partition instead of a device. So instead of ’/dev/sdzX’, ’/dev/sdz’ should be used as the device field of grub-configuration.

The Lenovo Ideapad 100S’s owner tried a USB drive prepared with a purely 32-bit GRUB as per -o mbrhfs.iso and it boots fine. I do not know and did not try yet how to configure GRUB to produce both
