[aspell] aspell and php

I have aspell (v 0.29.1-1) installed on Debian Linux and it works fine in
command line mode.  However, when a php page trys
$aspell_link=aspell_new ("english");

... I get this error:
Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function aspell_new() 

Any ideas about what could be wrong?  What I could check?
