I don't think I did anything wrong. I just realized that pdflatex is a 
Cygwin symlink to pdfetex but AUCTeX, being a plain Windows app (the 
precompiled emacs advertised on the AUCTeX web site, I mean), must spawn 
a plain cmd.com shell and thus cannot follow that cygwin link. Using 
Cygwin and plain Windows apps together is often problematic.
