Yes, and the other variables as well.

After opening a file loading the beamer class there should be a line
like
Loading /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/style/beamer.elc...done
in the *Messages* buffer.  What's there in your case?

I was told the fix did not make it into 11.83.
