I do not think so. In the first place, you have to create the macro. It
takes some time and not so skilled users may not be able to do this. Out
of the box support for d'n'd would work for everybody.

Additionally, my approx also works when you drag images from web
browser. Acutally, in my case, the figures were graphs from some
experiments and I had several .html pages (with some nice navigation
between experiments) which contain the information about the experiment
and the graph. In the browser, I naviaged to the right experiment and
then drag the image to Emacs. You can look at
http://rtime.felk.cvut.cz/can/benchmark/2/ and compare it with dired
navigation.
