I have gs 9.26, but with `preview-pdf-color-adjust-method' set to `compatible', I don't get any images at all. Or, more precisely, I get
blank images of maybe 2x2cm, see first screenshot:

Doesn't a redisplay (typing C-l) make the expected image appear there? I sometimes get similar blank rectangles and they turn into expected images when I type C-l. (Though my gs is not 9.26, I expect it doesn't
make difference.)

No, unfortunately it doesn't. I just checked the _region_.prv/ directory where the images should reside, and all there is is a single preview.dsc file. When `preview-pdf-color-adjust-method` is set to t, it contains a bunch of png files.

So it seems that for some reason the conversion from dsc to png doesn't work. I included the output of `C-c C-p C-b` in both cases below. The only difference seems to be the `-dDELAYBIND` argument passed to `rungs`.

The preview.dsc file that's created in the bad case (preview-pdf-color-adjust-method) seems far too small to contain any useful information (I included it below as well), but because the preview.dsc file seems to be deleted in a successful run, I can't compare the two.
