It seems that since commit 3715541f5605c821d992645cdf981331e05c5980, using
AC_PROG_CC_FOR_BUILD results in "test: =: unary operator expected" syntax
error in output of configure.
$ cat configure.ac
AC_INIT
AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4])
AC_PROG_CC_FOR_BUILD
AC_OUTPUT
$ autoreconf
$ ./configure

checking whether the C compiler works... yes
