It may have been deprecated in Autoconf, but it's still part of the
GNU coding standards <http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards_49.html>.
Autoconf should continue to support it as long as it in the coding
standards, and perhaps even for some time after it's removed from the
coding standards.
I don't offhand see the harm of supporting "configure FOO" as a
synonym for "configure --build=FOO".
(Hmm, I though Akim was trying to get the GCS changed here -- perhaps
it didn't take, or only part of his changes were accepted?)
