FYI: a fix in status.m4 (ac_eof)

Hello,
  I have just committed this patch.

  I noticed an underquoted regex in status.m4.
When I was there I made a small modification, which
- makes the code more readable by pointing out that the complicated
  ac_eof determination is needed only in unusual cases;
- reduces the number of forks in the common case, making the code
  quicker on plaforms with expensive forks (ie. Cygwin).
