What you say is true. Luckily for me
For compatibility with other ELF linkers, if the `-R' option is
followed by a directory name, rather than a file name, it is
treated as the `-rpath' option.
so I get there by the back door. The original problem was that there was
no -rpath -rpath-link nor -R.
