Thanks! Almost perfect.
There was one new 'make syntax-check' failure, because
Makefile\.maint needed to be renamed in one more .x-sc* file.
Also, the other two .x-sc renamings were not officially needed,
since Makefile.maint no longer had to be listed as an exception.
I've just removed those names, along with some other stale ones.
