Well, Eric referred to them as "internal details" in a previous mail.
And while they might not be exactly "internal", I think that relying 
on them in third-party code is bad practice, and I agree with Eric 
that we should suggest the use of $EXEEXT and $OBJEXT (which are 
AC_SUBST, and are used also by Automake IIRC).

Maybe the ChangeLog entry and the git commit message could have been 
expressed better, though.  But that's not a big deal IMHO.
