You might want to dig into the Autoconf archives.  For instance, start
with

    http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/autoconf-patches/2000-July/005546.html

and dig around.

Since then, I still have improved the idea.  Again, CVS M4 is a good
model.  This is still something I'm interested in doing myself, as I
have already done a couple of implementation of the idea.  I had
written --trace precisely to make these kind of things possible.

But leave me some time :(
