Please look in lib/autoconf/general.m4:
# _AC_RUN_LOG(COMMAND, LOG-COMMANDS)
# ----------------------------------
# Eval COMMAND, save the exit status in ac_status, and log it.

You should try to use AC_TRY_RUN (which is both documented and exists
in both 2.5x and 2.13.
