sorry, i found it after all in the mailinglist's archive:
@datadir@ seems to be the wrong way at all.  I tried

MY_CONFIG_FILE=`eval echo ${datadir}/my_config_file`
[default configuration file])

and it seems to work fine both with and without config.h
