Use _LINK e.g.
if whatever
LINKER=$(CXX)
else
LINKER=$(WHATEVER)
endif
yourprogram_LINK = $(LINKER) $(AM_CFLAGS) $(CFLAGS) $(AM_LDFLAGS) $(LDFLAGS) -o
$@
