what I do is (via an autoconf macro of course) substitute an "echo" statement and a "@" at the beginning of the rules, e.g.,

.c.o :
        @echo compiling $<
        @$(CC) $(CPPFLAGS) $(CFLAGS) -c $(srcdir)/$*.c

.c.i :
        @echo compiling $<
        @$(CPP) -C $(CPPFLAGS) $*.c >$@
